Xylofagou is a farming village in the Larnaca district, on the road between Larnaca and Ayia Napa, and it is home to the most photographed vegetable in Europe.
In October 2021 the village unveiled a 4.9-metre fibreglass potato by the artist George Tasou, built to celebrate the local Spunta variety and the annual potato festival, and inspired by the Big Fish in Belfast. The Spunta is a notably elongated potato. The sculpture is a faithful representation of one, and the internet noticed. It went viral worldwide within days, for reasons that had nothing to do with agriculture.
It has since been vandalised, repaired, decorated as a Christmas tree, damaged in a storm, and used in a failed Guinness World Record attempt for frying chips. It stands in the centre of the village, it is free, and it takes five minutes.
If you are driving between Larnaca and Ayia Napa it is barely a detour, and it is the best photograph you will take on this island.
