Makronissos Beach: the complete guide

Makronissos is one of Ayia Napa’s calmer, more family-friendly beaches – a sheltered Blue Flag bay a little west of the famous Nissi Beach. With powdery golden sand, clear shallow water and a set of ancient rock-cut tombs a short walk inland, it offers the same beautiful coastline as its busier neighbours but with a gentler, less frenetic atmosphere.

The setting and character

Makronissos is made up of three small bays separated by low rock formations and sand dunes, which gives the beach a sense of shelter and a little privacy even when it is busy. It sits away from the main resort strip, so the mood is relaxed and unhurried compared with central Ayia Napa. The setting is open and sunny, with the dunes and coves breaking the shoreline into pockets you can settle into for the day.

The sand and the sea

The sand here is soft, pale and golden – genuinely powdery underfoot – and the sea is crystal clear, shallow and gently sloping. The water often stays calm thanks to the sheltered shape of the bays, and it is clean enough that you can spot small fish just a few metres from shore. That combination of soft sand and safe, shallow water is what makes Makronissos such a reliable family choice.

The ancient tombs nearby

A short walk from the sand are the Makronissos Tombs, a group of rock-cut chamber tombs dating from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site is free to visit and makes an easy, interesting break from the beach – a reminder that this quiet corner of the coast has a very long history. It is a nice extra that most of Ayia Napa’s party beaches cannot offer.

Makronissos is a natural fit for families, thanks to the shallow, calm water and the shelter of the bays. It also suits couples after a quieter day by the sea, and active visitors who want water sports without the crowds and noise of the resort centre. If your priority is nightlife right off the sand, you will be better served closer to town – Makronissos is about relaxed beach days.

Best time to visit

The sea is warm and swimmable roughly from June to October, with July and August the hottest and busiest months. For softer light, smaller crowds and comfortable temperatures, aim for June, September or early October. Even at peak times the three-bay layout helps spread people out, but arriving in the morning still gives you the best pick of spots.

How to get there

Makronissos lies about five kilometres west of Ayia Napa town centre – roughly a ten-minute drive – and is close to Nissi and Landa beaches, so it is easy to combine them. There is parking by the beach and a coastal path linking the bays. The nearest airport is Larnaca International, about a forty-five-minute drive to the west.
