Mackenzie Beach: the complete guide

Mackenzie Beach (sometimes written McKenzie or Makenzy) is Larnaca’s liveliest stretch of coast – a Blue Flag beach running for roughly a kilometre right beside Larnaca International Airport. By day it is a broad, easy-going family beach; by night the strip of beach bars and restaurants behind it becomes one of the town’s main places to eat, drink and go out. It is one of the few beaches anywhere where sunbathing and plane-spotting go hand in hand.

The setting and character

Mackenzie sits just south of Larnaca town, tucked between the seafront and the airport perimeter. It has a distinctly urban, sociable feel rather than a wild or secluded one: a paved promenade backs the sand, and a near-continuous run of cafes, tavernas, cocktail bars and clubs faces the water. The mood shifts through the day, from relaxed morning swims to a buzzy afternoon crowd and a busy evening scene, and the area regularly hosts open-air events and live music in season.

The sand and the sea

The sand is fine and firm in shades of brown and beige – comfortable for walking barefoot and good for a game of beach volleyball. The sea is typically calm, clear and shallow, shelving very gently so that you can wade out a fair way before it deepens. That gentle gradient is a big part of the beach’s appeal for families with young children, though it means the water can be busy close to shore in high summer.

Planes overhead

The beach’s signature feature is its position beneath the flight path. Aircraft on their final approach pass low over the bay before touching down, which is a genuine draw for aviation enthusiasts and a novelty for everyone else. It is worth knowing in advance that the passing planes bring occasional noise – part of the fun for some, something to factor in if you are after total peace and quiet.

• A long line of beach bars, cafes and restaurants directly behind the sand

Mackenzie works for a wide range of visitors. Families appreciate the shallow, gentle water and the on-hand facilities; younger travellers come for the bars and nightlife; and couples or solo visitors can happily split the difference, swimming by day and staying on for dinner and drinks. It suits anyone who likes a beach with plenty going on rather than a quiet, remote cove.

Best time to visit

The sea is warm and swimmable roughly from June to October, with the hottest, busiest weeks falling in July and August. For a calmer atmosphere and pleasant temperatures, late May, June, September and early October are ideal. Mornings are the quietest time to claim a good spot, while evenings are when the bar-and-restaurant strip comes into its own.

How to get there

Mackenzie lies a short distance south of Larnaca town centre – only about a five-minute drive, or a pleasant walk of a couple of kilometres along the seafront. It is exceptionally close to Larnaca International Airport, just a few minutes away by car, which makes it a popular first or last stop for anyone with time to fill around a flight. Local buses run along the coast, and there is parking near the beach.
