Finikoudes Beach: the complete guide

Finikoudes (also spelt Foinikoudes) is Larnaca’s central town beach and the heart of the city’s seafront life. Backed by a palm-lined promenade – the name comes from the Greek word for palm trees – it is a Blue Flag beach that puts sand, sea, cafes and history within a few steps of each other. If you want a beach you can walk to from the middle of town, this is it.

The setting and character

Finikoudes runs for roughly 600 metres along Larnaca’s waterfront, framed by a broad pedestrian promenade shaded by rows of palms. It is the most popular spot in the city for locals and visitors alike, with a sociable, urban feel rather than a secluded one. A fishing harbour and marina sit at one end and Larnaca’s medieval castle anchors the other, so a beach day here easily folds in a stroll, a coffee and a little sightseeing.

The sand and the sea

The sand is fine in shades of brown and beige, imported and maintained to keep the town beach in good condition. The sea is typically calm and shallow, shelving gently from the shore, which makes it reassuring for families and comfortable for a relaxed swim. Because it is a central town beach it can get busy in high summer, particularly at weekends, so mornings are the calmest time for a dip.

As a fully organised Blue Flag beach in the middle of town, Finikoudes is well served. You can typically expect:

• Sunbeds and umbrellas for hire – expect to pay a daily fee
• Showers, toilets and changing facilities
• Lifeguards on duty through the main summer season
• Water sports and boat trips from the pier and marina
• A continuous run of cafes, bars, restaurants and shops along the promenade

Beyond the beach

Part of Finikoudes’ appeal is everything around it. The palm promenade is the town’s main gathering place, lively from morning coffee to late-evening drinks, and it hosts events and festivals through the year. From the marina and pier you can join mini cruises and fishing trips, and the medieval castle at the southern end is an easy add-on for a bit of history between swims.

Who it suits

Finikoudes suits almost everyone, which is exactly why it is so popular. Families like the shallow water and the on-hand facilities; couples and solo travellers enjoy being able to swim, dine and wander without needing a car; and anyone staying centrally gets a proper beach on their doorstep. It is less suited to those seeking peace, quiet or unspoilt nature – this is a town beach, first and foremost.

Best time to visit

The sea is warm and swimmable roughly from June to October, with peak crowds in July and August. Late spring and early autumn bring pleasant temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere, while the promenade is enjoyable year-round for a walk or a meal even outside swimming season. As with most central beaches, arrive early in the day to find space at the busiest times.

How to get there

Finikoudes could hardly be more central – it is right in the middle of Larnaca town, reachable on foot from most of the centre and served by local buses and nearby car parks. Larnaca International Airport is only a short drive south, roughly ten to fifteen minutes by car or taxi, which makes the beach a convenient stop at the start or end of a trip.
